In honor of the Fourth of July, the Las Vegas 51s shot off fireworks after tonight’s game at Cashman Field. The fireworks shows always draw big crowds — even when the 51s aren’t playing their new cross-state rivals, the rookie Reno Aces. Another fireworks display is scheduled for Friday following Las Vegas’ game against Reno. The Las Vegas franchise has had plenty of explosions on the field in its 27-year history. In keeping with the fireworks theme, here are some of those memorable performances:

I used to call Colin Cowherd “The World’s Most Dangerous Sportscaster.” It was both a nod to the “World’s Most Dangerous Band,” which is what David Letterman called Paul Shaffer and his musical pals before they became “The CBS Orchestra,” and a tribute to Cowherd’s propensity for doing George Plimpton-esque stunts during his days as sports director for KVBC-TV, Channel 3.

Layla McCarter didn’t end her long awaited rematch with Fujin Raika with the explosive knockout she’d hoped for Friday night, but the dazzling display of boxing she did put on at the South Point arena was as fitting as any fireworks exhibition reserved for later on this Independence day. The Las Vegas-based fighter scored a decisive unanimous decision victory, with all three judges scoring the bout 100-90, despite an 11-month hiatus from the ring. “I could definitely feel I was a little off early on, but it was good to knock some of that ring rust off,” said a smiling McCarter, who with the victory retained the World Boxing Association (WBA) and Global Boxing Union (GBU) women's lightweight championships.

LA are flying in the west but there's plenty of life in the other divisions. Nick Shiambouros catches up with life in the National League... The National League is as competitive as ever at the halfway point of the season with plenty of teams still in the hunt for the play-offs.In the East the world champion Philadelphia Phillies are at the top of a very competitive division and are in for a real fight with the Florida Marlins, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves all within two games of the lead.It is no surprise to see Philadelphia at [17.5] to repeat as world champions as they do not look the same team as last year. The Phillies have one of the worst home records in baseball at 13-22 and unless they can get things going there they will struggle. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels appears to have lost his way on the mound and his ERA has risen to 4.98. The surprise package in this division is the resurgence of the Florida Marlins. This team is playing some outstanding baseball this season and short stop Hanley Ramirez is batting at an average of .348 and leads the league. The Marlins are trading at a generous [50.0] to win the world series and I have backed them at this price. It is sad to see so few people at the home games, but the recession has hit Florida very hard. The Central division is led by the Milwaukee Brewers but only six games separate all six teams. At the beginning of the season I fancied the St Louis Cardinals to take this division but I have been a little disappointed with their hitting. The great Albert Pujols is averaging .335 but he is getting little help from anyone else. The Cardinals are trading at [23.0] to win the World Series but I'm in no hurry to take this price. Over in the West, the Los Angeles Dodgers are leading the division by 7.5 games and have reached this point without the brilliant Manny Ramirez. This superstar was suspended for the first 50 games of the year due to a failed drug test. Ramirez claims he was taking a prescription female fertility medication for
health reasons.Ramirez will be back in action on July 16 and his presence will only strengthen this great team. The Dodgers are trading at [7.4] to win the World Series and I think it is a very fair price indeed. I believe this team has what it takes to be world champions and they look sure to make the playoffs even at this stage of the season. In addition to quality pitching they have a talented hitter in Juan Pierre who is averaging .322 for the year. The second half of the season in the National League is going to be very interesting and, with the exception of Los Angeles in the West, the other two divisions are wide open with at least ten teams in contention.Recommended wagersBack the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the World Series at 7.4.Back the Florida Marlins to win the World Series at 50

Nick Shiambouros provides a half-way report from both divisions of the American League... At the halfway point of the season almost every team in the American League has a chance of making the post-season.The hardest division to win is clearly the East which includes the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox and last year's champions the Tampa Bay Rays. Just six games separate four teams with Boston leading the table. If I had to pick a winner now it would be the Red Sox but they are only 2.88 to win the American League championship. First baseman Kevin Youklis is having an outstanding season and is hitting the ball well averaging .314. The Rays who beat the Sox in an epic seven game thriller last season to win the ALCS are only four games behind Boston. This team if firmly in the hunt again but this is one tough league to win. Tampa are currently [17.5] to win the World Series but that price is a little short in my opinion. The New York Yankees as always are in contention and are three games behind Boston. This team has one of the deepest line-ups in baseball with a wealth of talent including Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. As a result they are always a far shorter price than they should be and are only [5.6] to win the World Series. This price is way to short for a team that has come up short when it mattered in the last few years. The Central division is led by the Detroit Tigers who are two games ahead of the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers have not pitched well recently but their bullpen has come up huge and in truth this is why they are in first place. The surprise team in this division are the Minnesota Twins who are playing very well. Starting pitchers Nick Blackburn and Scott Baker are throwing the ball well and are keeping this unfashionable team in the playoff race. The Twins are currently 46 to win the World Series and at this price may be worth an interest.Meanwhile, in the West.... The Los Angeles Angels are leading the West but the Texas Rangers and the Seattle Mariners are within two games in this hotly contested division. The Angels are currently [15.0] to win the World Series and I think that is a fair price at this stage of the season. Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was tragically killed by a drunk driver after making his season debut in early April and this team is playing with a very heavy
heart. Every player is wearing his number 34 on their uniforms as a mark of respect. The Texas Rangers are in deep
financial trouble and it has been reported that Major League Baseball has loaned owner Tom Hicks millions to make payroll. This kind of news can only have a negative effect on a team and they will have a tough time keeping pace with Los Angeles. Recommended wagers:Back the Los Angeles Angels to win the World Series at [15.0]
